What Is a .EML (Email Message) File?
EML (Electronic Mail, standardized by IETF RFC 5322 and the MIME specifications RFC 2045–2049) is the universal plain-text archival format for individual email messages exported by Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Gmail ("Download message"), ProtonMail, and enterprise compliance gateways. Because `.eml` preserves the exact wire-format SMTP headers, cryptographic DKIM/SPF authentication results, multipart HTML/plain-text bodies, and base64-encoded attachments in a single self-contained file, it is the global standard for legal e-discovery, cybersecurity phishing analysis, and email migration.
Binary Architecture, Header Structure & Client-Side Parsing
An `.eml` file (`message/rfc822`) consists of two sections separated by a single blank line (`CRLF CRLF`, `0x0D 0x0A 0x0D 0x0A`): (1) the **RFC 5322 Header Block** (`From:`, `To:`, `Cc:`, `Date:`, `Subject:`, `Message-ID:`, `Received:` hop trace headers, `Authentication-Results:`, and `Content-Type:`), where non-ASCII UTF-8 characters in headers are encoded using RFC 2047 Encoded-Words (`=?UTF-8?B?...?=` or `=?UTF-8?Q?...?=`); and (2) the **MIME Multipart Body Tree**. A typical modern email declares `Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="---..."` containing a nested `multipart/alternative` branch (`text/plain` + `text/html` encoded with `Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable` where `=3D` represents `=`) alongside `Content-Disposition: attachment` or `inline` (`Content-ID` `cid:` image) parts encoded in `base64`. ViewAnyFile.app recursively parses the MIME boundary tree in browser memory, decodes Quoted-Printable and Base64 streams, resolves inline `cid:` images, and renders the sanitized HTML email alongside downloadable attachments.
Common .EML Compatibility & Troubleshooting Guide
When users try to open an `.eml` file on a computer without a configured desktop mail client, Windows either prompts to set up a Microsoft account in the New Outlook app or opens raw unreadable Base64 gibberish in Notepad. Even worse, when an email is forwarded as an `.eml` attachment (`message/rfc822`), many webmail clients fail to preview nested attachments inside the attached `.eml`. Our browser parser decodes the entire MIME tree and lets you download any nested attachment with one click.
Why Engineers & Teams Use ViewAnyFile for .EML Files
- Open `.eml` files instantly without installing or configuring Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird
- Full recursive MIME multipart parser — decodes Quoted-Printable, Base64, and RFC 2047 UTF-8 headers
- Inspect complete `From`, `To`, `CC`, `Date`, and `Subject` headers plus formatted HTML body
- Extract and preview embedded file attachments (`PDF`, `DOCX`, `XLSX`, `JPG`) directly inside your browser
- 100% local sandboxing — confidential legal discovery emails and sensitive HR threads never upload to any server
Common Production Workflows for .EML Files
- Opening `.eml` email attachments forwarded by colleagues or legal counsel without a desktop mail client
- Legal e-discovery teams reviewing archived email evidence and downloading attached exhibits privately
- Cybersecurity SOC analysts inspecting suspicious `.eml` phishing samples safely in a sandboxed browser viewer
- Auditing exported Gmail, Google Vault, or Microsoft Purview compliance archives
- Reading historical backup emails exported from Apple Mail or Thunderbird on any device
- Verifying HTML email template rendering and MIME structure generated by transactional mailers (SendGrid, SES, Postmark)

Frequently Asked Questions — .EML Format Specification
Why do I see "=3D" and "=20" when I open an EML file in Notepad?
Those sequences are MIME `quoted-printable` transfer encoding (RFC 2045), which encodes special characters as `=` followed by their two-digit hexadecimal ASCII code (`=3D` is the equals sign `=`, `=20` is a space, and a trailing `=` at the end of a line is a soft line wrap). ViewAnyFile.app decodes Quoted-Printable and Base64 automatically.
Can I download attachments that are inside an EML file?
Yes! Our MIME parser extracts every `Content-Disposition: attachment` part from the `.eml` file, displays its filename, MIME type, and byte size, and lets you download or preview it locally.
Is it safe to open a suspicious phishing .eml file here?
Yes. ViewAnyFile.app parses the `.eml` in an isolated client-side sandbox and strips `<script>` tags so malicious JavaScript inside HTML emails cannot execute.
What is the difference between an .EML file and an .MSG file?
`.eml` is an open, plain-text IETF standard (RFC 5322/MIME) supported by almost all email programs, whereas `.msg` is Microsoft Outlook’s proprietary binary OLE2 Compound File format (`D0 CF 11 E0`) storing MAPI properties. ViewAnyFile.app opens both!
